About

I am a watercolour and mixed media artist living in rural Somerset. My work reflects my personal interest in the natural world - its history, the imprint of man on the landscape and the transience of nature. The inspiration for landscape painting comes from the things I see every day and from travels throughout Europe. I love the English garden and my floral images arise from happy hours spent sitting amongst the flowers.

I usually begin with watercolour on paper working in a loose expressive style. Later I may apply layers of pastel, inks, oil and other materials to add texture, marks and heightened colour.

I am particularly interested in capturing the emotional response that accompanies being present in the landscape.Through experimentation, reflection and exploration I aim to capture these special moments.

It's always a pleasure to share the process of making pictures and I enjoy facilitating workshops which encourage creative expression through mark making. The art which gives me pleasure seems to arise when a degree of technical competence is infused with a kind of magic. The first can be learned but the second is more elusive. Details of workshops are to be found on the 'links' section.
